The Hillsborough Mixed-Use Tower
Raleigh, NC
266,000 SF
Located at a highly visible site in the heart of downtown, two blocks from the North Carolina state capitol, The Hillsborough represents a new building typology for Raleigh and the region: an integrated mixed-use program within a compact design on a small site that offers guests and residents a high level of amenity, service, and sophistication. The entire ground floor of the project is dedicated to building lobby, restaurant, and retail uses. The building massing and the exterior character each express the functional organization of the building while creating an articulation of the building mass that is sympathetic with its predominantly small-scale context. A screen of precast concrete defines the 12-story hotel with large-scale openings corresponding to the guest rooms behind, while the residential tower is clad with a transparent curtain wall, providing unobstructed views from the dwellings. These distinct elements are unified as a series of overlapping planes, creating a dynamic expression for the building exterior that asserts its presence with confidence and respect to its surroundings.
