Sustainable Design

As a design firm for some of the world’s largest entities, KlingStubbins recognizes the global reach and ultimate impact we possess to change the circumstances of our environment. We encourage our clients to view sustainability as an inherent and pervasive component of the design process. Sustainability requires an integrated approach to design, looking for solutions together that individual stakeholders cannot solve alone. Even as we strive to help our clients realize sustainability goals for their projects, we are working to achieve our own goals to meet our corporate obligation to society. We have instituted several levels of action to achieve a more sustainable practice.

Understanding that the places we design and occupy represent the largest sources of fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions, KlingStubbins has signed on to the AIA 2030 Commitment. We believe that altering our profession’s practices, and encouraging our clients and the overall design and construction industry to join us will be necessary to realize significant reductions in the use of natural resources, non-renewable energy sources, and waste production.

Our Firm
We are implementing strategies to assess, evaluate, and improve our own corporate carbon footprint. By reducing the energy use, transportation miles, and water and material use of our practice, we reduce the environmental impact of our firm. We have made progress in energy and water reduction, and are implementing aggressive recycling programs in each office. Travel and transportation strategies are in place to reduce the number of miles traveled and to facilitate alternative methods of transportation.

Our Project, Our Process
Each project team is structured to facilitate a holistic approach to project design – this is intended to help make better projects, more sustainable outcomes, and higher performing buildings for our clients. Interdisciplinary cooperation is integral to project success. We have developed tools and work flows that enable project teams to set sustainability goals in early conceptual phases, evaluate performance metrics during design, and to maintain those goals throughout the documentation and construction process.

Our Communities
We are working to contribute our expertise to the communities that we occupy while locally and nationally taking part in civic and neighborhood based initiatives and becoming involved in progress outside our own walls. By getting involved in community-based design activities, we can make an impact on our own society. Whether it is joining together with a local Philadelphia public elementary school on a greening effort, or involvement in the Cambridge Climate initiative, we find a way to stay involved in the neighborhoods we inhabit.
