GlaxoSmithKline (Formerly Glaxo Group Research, Ltd.)
Headquarters Campus
Marly-le-Roi, France
470,000 SF
Located on a historically and environmentally sensitive site near Versailles, this pharmaceutical headquarters design was predicated on a phased growth that would be respectful of both the area‘s traditions and the residential scale of its neighbors. The complex was constructed in three phases of 290,000 SF, 70,000 SF, and 110,000 SF. The design is composed of five L-shaped elements defining four intermediate courtyards. Each of the courtyards is intended to be viewed and experienced; and each has taken a different aspect of French landscape tradition as its premise. The buildings are clad in locally quarried limestone and are articulated with aluminum fins and light shelves.
