The LEED® Silver Certified MITRE Center is the ‘town square’ of MITRE Corporation’s 100-acre Bedford Campus. It contains common functions for 1,600 scientists and engineers who occupy five, three-story buildings linked to it by second-level bridges. The design task was to reconfigure the campus to bring all major circulation routes into a town square and to design a new, central facility around that square that fosters collaboration in both formal and spontaneous interchange. For the first time, interior and exterior circulation routes are interwoven in a clear and complementary pattern; the campus entry is accorded a dignity commensurate with MITRE’s work; and a vast, new array of enhanced common functions are centrally available to both employees and clients. The new campus plan and building support MITRE’s corporate goals of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and bringing the entire company to bear in support of their clients.
