Delaware Department of Transportation
Wilmington Transit Center
Wilmington, DE
250,000 SF
This facility will accommodate a 600-car parking garage, bus depot for Delaware Area Rapid Transit (DART) and Greyhound, a 45,000 SF office facility for DelDOT responsive to both public and private functions, and possible car rental agencies. The Wilmington Transit Center is designed to enhance its immediate urban site, to reinforce the location’s pivotal role in linking downtown to the riverfront, and to join with the Frank Furness designed train station in welcoming visitors to the city. Along Walnut Street, the shared bus station and the public functions of DelDOT (information, ticketing and sales, and community outreach programs) activate the pedestrian environment. The upper three stories, vertically linked by an atrium, contain the office requirements of the Department of Transportation in an open and highly flexible space where daylight provides the primary amenity. A linear bar of building support spaces separates the office space from the garage to the east.
