Submarine Escape Training School
Groton, CT
22,600 SF
This design / build project for the Navy provides a container for the Naval Submarine Fleet’s new MK-10 submarine escape immersion equipment (SEIE), which offers realistic training methods for the escape from sunken and disabled submarines. The facility is composed of two buildings separated by an expansion joint and set off by a curtainwall, which allows natural light onto the pool deck and other training areas. A large cylindrical tower envelops the 40-foot dive tank for training; the 11,200 SF support building accommodates instructional and administrative areas. Seated securely within the rocky landscape, the roundness of the structure evokes the uniqueness and sense of history associated with the sub school.
