Fairfield University
Bannow Science Center
Fairfield, CT
52,400 SF
The Bannow addition is designed to be a “condominium” for science, accommodating a wide array of disciplines in a single structure. The design team worked intensively with the science faculty to create a single, flexible lab layout that could handle the needs of chemistry, biology, physics and psychology with equal ease. The creation of a 900 SF standard module allows rooms to adapt into different kinds of labs, offices, classrooms and support spaces. The building is connected to the existing Bannow Science Center by a four-story atrium space that serves as an entry, a major circulation and also as a “living room” for faculty and students passing through the building. The dramatic skylight atrium contains generous seating, computer network connections for laptops and video display capability. The space is large enough to handle special receptions, gatherings, presentations and exhibits.
