US Food and Drug Administration Headquarters Consolidation Master Plan
White Oak, MD
3,000,000 SF
Under the auspices of the General Services Administration, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has embarked upon an ambitious program to consolidate its myriad of programs and initiatives into 3,000,000 SF of new facilities on a single 170-acre site. The master plan seeks to encourage scientific excellence, gain efficiencies through shared use, facilitate staff interaction, provide maximum flexibility, keep any impact on operations to a minimum, reduce health and safety hazards, and provide a creative and productive environment. Calling for the reuse of a former naval base, the plan preserves the historical nature of the site. The master plan, with its floor plate design and size, is based on a kit-of-parts system that permits implementation in multiple phases and accommodation for future change. The GSA and the design team are committed to achieving the highest LEED® rating for the campus as a whole and for each individual building.
