The Science Center
Mixed-Use Master Plan
Philadelphia, PA
2,000,000 SF
For years, West Philadelphia has shown tremendous promise to become a world-class research and business incubator on a par with Cambridge and San Francisco. An expanded Science Center will help spur this transformation with 2,000,000 SF of new research, residential, and commercial space, housing several key area institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Conceptually, the Master Plan envisions an open, “metropolitan” district composed of five mixed-use buildings that vary in scale and material to reflect the typical urban fabric of the surrounding city neighborhoods. The plan will also employ ground-level retail to animate the Market Street pedestrian experience and create strong physical connections to the surrounding neighborhoods and universities—expanding and anchoring West Philadelphia as a true “Knowledge Community.”
