Amgen, the world’s largest biotech firm, created an advanced, state-of-the-art research center in the Amgen Center, designed to house not only Amgen staff, but to attract other collaborators such as biotech startups and medical institutions in the same building. The plan is based on a module that accommodates a wide variety of lab and office layouts, and the unique dispersed mechanical system allows each floor to operate independently, greatly enhancing operational flexibility. Throughout the Center’s eight floors, space is arranged so that all vertical penetrations for plumbing, wiring, ducts, and elevators are condensed into the central core. This leaves the perimeter of the building entirely free for any desired configuration of labs, offices, and support space.
