Set on a 30-acre campus in suburban England, this large-scale facility consolidated all of GlaxoSmithKline’s United Kingdom research operations and accommodated for future research and administrative expansion. The state-of-the-art research laboratory and office program is composed of twelve four- to six-story structures, and two three- and four-level garages to form a highly interactive campus enhanced by greens, ponds and water features. The objective was to create a quality work environment worthy of world-class scientists and professionals and, at the same time, encourage a close-knit community. The complex’s buildings consist of research laboratories for chemistry and biochemistry; microbiology; biology; administrative offices; a Central Research Support Facility; a chemistry pilot plant; a microbiology pilot plant; a computer center; commons; an energy center; a warehouse; an incinerator; and more than 1,400 parking spaces in two structured decks.
